Pain Versus Pleasure
Pain Versus Pleasure

Often in life we look at the short term pleasure, which causes us long term pain.
What’s better for you – an apple or a doughnut? It’s not a trick question. Apples beat doughnuts every time!
Of course, it’s not just about apples and doughnuts. Stop for a moment. Is there something that you could be doing, or could stop doing, that would make you healthier or happier? Smoking? Drinking? Stress? If you’re anything like us, then it’s probably not too hard to come up with some potential areas for improvement.
What’s tricky is why we don’t always “choose the apple”. We know what’s good for us, but we don’t always choose it. Instead we look for the short term pleasure, which creates long term pain.
Over the years, what we have noticed is that people make great changes to their life in one of two ways:
They link the change they’re making to something that’s important to them.
A smoker who was struggling to quit put a photo of his children in the front of his wallet. He couldn’t take money out of his wallet to buy cigarettes without looking his kids in the eye. For him, that was enough pain to help him through those days where “just one smoke” would have turned into another failed attempt to give up the death-sticks. He pushed through the boundaries of short term pain to create long term pleasure.
Sometimes when we are out for a run or a walk, on a day that we don’t feel like it, we think about our unborn grandchildren. We have had family members who were not healthy. They either smoked, were not educated with nutrition, mainly “yo yo” dieting and have not lived to see their Grandchildren grow up. On the other hand, we know some spritely and funny 90 year olds who live life with passion and purpose. We know which one we would rather be for our children and our grandchildren.

What could you do differently this year that would help you live a healthier, happier life? And even more importantly, what’s a really good reason WHY you’d make that change?
Well, what are you waiting for? More pain or more pleasure in your life?
